Andrew Van Tassel is an award-winning jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator.

His music draws inspiration from a broad palette of genres: bebop / hard bop, fusion, indie rock, classical music, and more. Andrew’s 2021 release on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records, Shape-Shifter, reflects this multifaceted approach that ultimately produces music distinctly his own while unveiling compelling explorations with electronics in a contemporary jazz ensemble context.

As a bandleader and performer, Andrew’s albums have received international praise from jazz critics. His bands have performed at several esteemed venues across the country, including ShapeShifter Lab, the Cornelia Street Café, the Bar Next Door, Rockwood Music Hall, Sharp 9 Gallery, and more. As a sideman, he has performed with an array of bands of varying genres including the GRAMMY-nominated Terraza Big Band.

As a composer, Andrew has garnered recognition as a recipient of the 2017 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award and semi-finalist in the 2021 International Songwriting Competition.

Andrew has served as a guest artist and clinician at distinguished schools across the country. He was most recently on faculty as a lecturer in jazz saxophone at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
