Brainy, with a heart.

Origin Story

From an early age, Andrew’s parents filled the house with Motown and classical music. Somewhere between the orchestra and the groove, jazz found him. He gravitated toward the saxophone—its voice felt human, and it resonated with his personality.

Andrew Van Tassel is a NYC-based saxophonist and composer who bridges the tradition of jazz with contemporary musical languages. His life spans two distinct worlds—finance and music—a perspective that blends analytical rigor with creative freedom, shaping a voice defined by both precision and intuition.

Van Tassel guides listeners through melodic storytelling, deep grooves, and lyrical improvisation, crafting music that is immersive, exploratory, and deeply personal. His music moves fluidly between delicate lyricism and full-throttle release—always anchored in emotional honesty—and has been described as having “depth and imagination” (The Patriot Ledger) and a “classic Blue Note feel” (Jazz & Blues Report).

He has performed at notable venues including Carnegie Hall, Rockwood Music Hall, and national jazz festivals, and has collaborated with a wide range of artists—from the GRAMMY-nominated Terraza Big Band to orchestras, rock bands, hip-hop producers, and experimental electronic artists. His work has earned honors including first prize in the 7 Virtual Jazz Club Competition (2025), semifinalist placements in the International Songwriting Competition (2021, 2023, 2024), and an ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award (2017).

After studying at the Manhattan School of Music and New England Conservatory, Andrew now gives back to the next generation of jazz musicians as a guest artist and clinician at distinguished schools across the country. He was most recently on faculty as a lecturer in jazz saxophone at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Andrew has also donated his time as Associate Artistic Director of Musical Mentors Collaborative, Inc., a nonprofit supporting equitable access to music education.

A hybrid of traditional and contemporary… plenty of both but all of neither.
